March 28 — Quiet Water, No Breakthrough… But Getting Closer
Saturday, March 28.
No lesson this day—
just a full solo session.
The forecast ahead of time looked promising: 5–6 m/s.
“Alright… this should be a good one.”
I pictured clean conditions for my 6.0m wing and headed to Enoshima with high expectations.
And then—
Yep. It happened again.
Morning update:
Down to 3 m/s.
“Here we go…”
The Pattern I’m Starting to See
At this point, I’ve learned:
Afternoon south winds tend to drop last minute.
Still—
I go anyway.
Because even in light wind, there’s always something to work on.
On Site — Just Enough to Try
Arrived around 1:30 PM.
Wind felt like 2–3 m/s.
“Tough… but not zero.”
That’s enough.
I went straight into setup:
- Foil assembly
- Mounting to the board
- Wing prep
- Life jacket, leash, helmet
Loaded everything onto the cart,
navigated through the crowd,
and made my way to the launch area.
On the way, my instructor came out to see me off.
“Looks light today, but good luck.”
That one line helped me reset mentally.
Someone Was Foiling
Out on the water—
Yeah, still light.
Windsurfers barely moving.
But then—
I saw one guy.
Foiling.
In this wind.
“Wait… seriously?”
Same ocean. Same wind.
And yet—he’s flying.
That hit me.
“Once you get to that level, everything changes.”
Offshore — Wind Didn’t Improve
I started by heading upwind.
Both tacks felt solid—
definitely more stable than before.
So I kept going offshore.
Further than usual.
Almost to the lighthouse.
“Maybe there’s more wind out here.”
Nope.
Same wind.
But now—
Swell.
Close to 1 meter, rolling in slowly.
Weak wind, but moving water.
“Yeah… this is tricky.”
I called it there, jibed, and headed back.
The Core Work (Not Flashy, But Important)
On the way back, I focused on foiling attempts.
- Wing pumping
- Board pumping
- Weight on the back foot
Everything I’ve been building—step by step.
Pressure was right.
Movements felt good.
“I’ve got the feel.”
But—
No lift.
One Moment… Almost
There was one moment—
“Is this it?”
But it didn’t fully connect.
That was it.
With this wind, that was the limit.
What I Know for Sure Now
No big results today.
No lift. Just riding.
Not exactly exciting to write about.
But—
My confidence is stronger than ever.
- Pumping is getting consistent
- Movements are repeatable
- I’m ready—if the wind shows up
At this point, it’s clear:
Give me 1–2 m/s more… and I’m on foil.
Three Hours That Matter
Before I knew it, I’d been out there for three hours.
Nothing dramatic happened.
But I moved forward.
And honestly—
These are probably the most important days.
What’s Next
At this stage, it’s not about skill anymore.
It’s about conditions.
Wind.
That’s it.
Next time—
If the wind shows up,
I’m stepping into the next level.
Final Thought
It was a quiet day.
No breakthrough.
But the feeling is clear—
I’m getting close.
